HOW IT CAME ABOUT . . .
Reunion planning was long and tedious, with monthly meetings of your "reunion team" at Sandy and Nick's. We brought forth ideas; we researched ideas; we approved ideas, we rejected ideas, we budgeted and re-budgeted, we got frustrated, even cranky perhaps, but we carried on and, yes, we're still speaking to each other. A day-long work party was held the week before our event to make ready in advance any decorations that could be. The vision was to transform the Edmonds Senior Center into a suitable scene for our 50th Anniversary Reunion. Many thanks to our hard-working "reunion team," as well as all the volunteers who showed up on Saturday morning to execute the plan. You did great! |
Early preview of the Senior Center. It was big and bare and a bit shabby, with three support pillars down the middle of the room. Hmmmm ... how could we disguise them? |
The "lunchroom" of the Senior Center, not exciting except for the fabulous waterfront view sand, sea, sky and Washington State Ferry activity. |
Rose Campbell and Gloria Gordon at pre-event workparty. Branches were first decorated with strings of clear lights, then dressed with gold metallic curled ribbons. |
Nick Konikson, Larry Campbell and Jim Nopson decorate branches during the workparty held at Sandy (Forsgren) Konikson's home on July 19th. |
Rare break for Sandy ... cutting wires for attaching light strings to branches, which came from Sandy and Nick's red maple tree. |
Rose Campbell, Greg and Gail Bergere, discussing the plan. Transformation is about to begin. |
Bring in the supplies, the decorations, and the volunteers. Let's get this job underway! |
Cover the bulletin board. Make it invisible. We want folks to focus on EHS reminders and each other. |
How to hide that coat rack? With buckets of bamboo—it's good for more than fishing poles. And it'll grow back fast! |
Dorothy and Rose cover the bamboo buckets while Gloria strings extension cords from the wall outlets across the ceiling to the pillars. |
Gary Kirkpatrick lends a hand covering the bamboo buckets with purple. |
Bring on the branches! Decorated beforehand with clear holiday lights and curls of gold metallic ribbons, they will add to the ambience and blend the pillars into the room. Larry, Norm and Herb. |
"Here. Hand me the fishing line. I'll take it around to the other side." Jim, Bruce and Gary fix decorated branches to another pillar. |
Norm and Larry clear the wall in preparation for the panels of purple plastic tablecoth that will soon disguise it. Oh yes, move the piano out a bit ... it'll be put to good use soon! |
Gail & Greg Bergere decorate one of the Senior Center's artificial trees with strings of lights. |
Gary and Norm string yet another of the Senior Center's trees with clear holiday lights. |
"The balloons are here!" Rose is delighted they finally arrived200 helium-filled balloons in shades of purple, shades of gold, and crystal clear. |
A tiger, a tree, a bouquet of balloons ... the transformation continues. What is that purple stuff visible in the background? |
Dorothy, Sandy, and Gail bring out the panels of purple plastic tablecoth fabric that will camouflage the walls. Get out the ladders. Tall volunteers welcome here. |
Gail and Greg start the installation ... a new concept in "wall covering." Dave Martin looks on. |
Starting at the ceiling, Greg B. and Paul Sorensen install wall color. Meanwhile, on the floor, tables and chairs are being carefully set in place. (not shown) |
Dave Martin, Dorothy Love Nopson and Bruce Grimstad chat a moment during the transformation. The purple lies in wait to cover more walls. |
First section of wall nearly complete. It's a long wall to cover, and the volunteer crew stays with it until it's all done. |
Time for the five foot Bengal Tiger head to be displayed. It's an oil-pastel rendering done by Gloria Hatcher Gordon. Meanwhile (not shown), the tables are being adorned with white tablecoths, crystal toasting glasses, flower centerpieces, and such. |
The tiger is fixed in place, across the room from the main entrance. Balloons frame the tiger face, branches and trees sparkle with anticipation of the celebration. The snacks are in place, thanks to Paula Miller McClanahan and crew. The tables are set. |
Specially imprinted champagne toasting flutes add a touch of elegance to our reunion dinner tables. They will serve our Special Toast to the Class of 1958, and be a "take home souvenir" of this celebration. |
A moment of quiet reflection is enjoyed by those who did not travel over to the old high school building for a rare peek inside. The transformation is complete. Let the reunion begin! (Page 1) |
