This plaque remains at our "old" high school building in downtown Edmonds, reminder of a past life. Now redesigned into the Edmonds Center for the Arts, the grand art-deco structure continues to serve the community. Our class of 1958 was fortunate, indeed, to tour the building on Saturday afternoon. Our host was Joe McIalwain, Executive Director. |
2:30 PM ... tour of the OLD SCHOOL! Some of us drove from the Senior Center, some of us walked. |
It's a beautiful day, and we visit outside until our host invites us to come in! |
Impressive. Silent. These are the doors that will welcome usthe Class of 1958, the last senior class to attend school in this buildngback to our roots. |
Executive Director, Joe McIalwain, leads us into the redesigned auditorium. This is where performances take place. We take a seat. McIalwain addresses us from center stage. |
Having explained to us about the reconstruction, events and future plans, McIalwain turns us loose to wander the building. First stop is the gracious lobby. (G. Mason Hall's office is gone.) |
We crowd into the gym entrance. The room is big and bright, painted (we are told) purple and gold by the Class of 1952. A tribute to the Tigers that once called this place home. |
Stop and listen, and you can almost hear the cheers; the whistles, the squeaking of athletic shoes on the hardwood floor and the reverberation of the basketball hoop as the ball bounces into the net. |
We climb the stairs to the second floor (there is an elevator available) to walk the halls and visit the classrooms that are open to us. |
Carpet. The room has carpet! Which room was this? The library? Study hall? Not even the view from the windows can lend a clue. |
"Jimmy Nopson, you scrub those chalk boards clean. If the principal's office was still intact, I'd send you down there right now!" |
A few built-in lockers remain in the hallway. What do they hold ... memories? We'll never know, it is time to get back to our 50th Anniversary Reunion. |
