Summer Picnic - 2005
Saturday, August 13, turned out to be a great day on Whidbey Island for nearly 30 of us (including various relatives) from the EHS class of '58. The warm August day was filled with talking, laughing, eating, singing, and enjoying the beauty of Ward's home, White Deer Farm. Time together was worth the hour-and-a-half ferry waits or long drives via Deception Pass. (It was NOT the best weekend for the Hood Canal Bridge to be closed. Ferry traffic was awful.)
Welcome.......

Lookin good in Red
"Well.... don't she look good in red!"

If you've previously attended a reunion at Ward's, you can well imagine last weekend. Mostly, we hung out in the car barn or wandered outside in the sunshine. The jukebox played 50s music and, in the late afternoon/early evening, Bruce Grimstad's guitar appeared (surprise!) and we sang until there were no songs left. We don't know what we'd do without Bruce and his music. Bruce was accompanied by James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Roy Rogers. I think.
Yes, of COURSE we stood and sang the Marine hymn, as requested by Arlene, Our Token Marine. (Yes, that does rhyme, doesn't it?) If you have 50s/60s music questions of any sort, by the way, ask Jan Hansen. She's younger than we are and knows ever so many more songs by heart. (Jan also had the presence of mind to bring a Costco carrot cake. Thanks for breakfast, Jan; I saved a piece and ate it as I sat in the sunshine in the ferry line on Sunday morning. Also, I ate the piece Sharon Peterson saved for HER breakfast. Sorry.)
For those interested in a livestock report, there are two ducklings this season. I saw no other infant animals. The two reindeer, several miniature horses and the peacock seemed to be in especially fine humor. (Alas, the camel now lives elsewhere. Ward offended her this past year by being away from home too often, and she retaliated by taking her barn apart, board by board. She was allowed to take the four llamas with her, for company, and is reported to be healthy and content on a different farm. (Some of US, however, were NOT happy to discover she was missing.)
Speaking of missing, if you weren't there, we wish you had been. We missed you. (Yes, Phil, I know it was difficult to choose: Accept the invitation to go to Ireland on a fishing trip or go to Whidbey to be with your classmates. Fishing in IRELAND?) And I know that family members are funny about wanting folks around for their birthdays or whatever, so staying home to do family things was noble of those who did so. Try not to let it happen next time. Somehow, for our class, there is always a next time, isn't there?      Just hanging out together Saturday was a delight. We were our own entertainment. Somehow, just flipping through old annuals or reunion booklets kept some of us amused for quite a while. (How many times can we look with wonder at the same old photos?) Speaking of photos, Gary Smith took several thousand, I'm sure, so you'll get to see us all at play.
Whether people came early or late, no one wanted to leave at the end of the day, though almost everyone needed to do so. Ward's warm hospitality gave us a wonderful venue for a special summer get-together. Thanks to Ward and to all who came to celebrate EHS '58. (Yes, that DOES rhyme, doesn't it?)
Since Helen awarded me the pleasant task of reporting on our time together, I'll take advantage of my opportunity to say that I think our class gets better with the years. Honestly, I do. What a treat to spend time with so many people with different and fascinating life experiences—still bound by the commonality of our school years together.   I'll see you in September at lunch in Marysville. ...
Fondly,   Joanne Bradbury Peterson
